President Alvi advises K-P governor to set date for elections

President Dr Arif Alvi met Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali on Tuesday and urged immediate elections in the province to ‘avoid complications’. Alvi advised the governor to implement the Supreme Court order regarding the date of elections after consulting with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). He furthered that two weeks had passed since the SC decision and urged the K-P governor to announce the date of the elections to “avoid complications” and “uphold the Constitution”. Read PML-N finally concedes to elections in Punjab, K-P “Elections in due were made mandatory by the Constitution and confirmed by the Supreme Court,” Alvi reiterated, adding that timely elections were essential to strengthening parliamentary democracy in the country. It is noteworthy that the date for elections in Punjab has been set for April 30, however, K-P has yet to announce an electoral date. Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered that President Arif Alvi should announce the date of the Punjab Assembly election, while the K-P governor would set the election date of the provincial assembly in consultation with the ECP. A five-judge larger bench of the apex court gave a 3-2 split verdict on a suo motu case about the election for the two provincial assemblies after holding a hearing for two days.
