PMD warns of thunderstorms, flash floods in K-P

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday warned of heavy rain and thunderstorms across several districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), issuing flood alerts for rivers and local streams amid concerns of potential landslides in hilly regions. The alert was issued after the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that the province had recorded the highest number of casualties in rain-related incidents, followed by 21 deaths in Punjab since June 26. At least 15 deaths were reported in Sindh and five in Balochistan, bringing the national toll to 63 within a week. Early morning showers, accompanied by strong winds, lashed Peshawar and nearby areas, bringing relief from intense heat and turning the weather pleasant. According to the PMD, a fresh rain system is likely to persist over the next few days. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Battagram, Shangla, and Kohistan. Similar weather conditions have been forecast for Torghar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kurram, and Mohmand. Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Chitral, Khyber, and Orakzai may also experience rain coupled with gusty winds. Southern parts of the province, including Kohat, Hangu, Bannu, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, and Tank, have also been placed on alert. The PMD warned of possible flooding in the Kabul, Swat, and Panjkora rivers. Flash flooding in local streams is also feared in Swabi, Mardan, Mansehra, Kohistan, Dir, Swat, and Shangla. The authority also flagged the risk of landslides in mountainous areas, which could disrupt road links and pose safety hazards for residents and travellers. Temperatures recorded across K-P during the current weather activity included 38°C in Peshawar, 42°C in both Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu, 39°C in Chitral, and 29°C in Kalam. Malam Jabba remained the coolest, with a recorded temperature of 25°C. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities. Monsoon alert issued for Sindh The PMD’s Early Warning Centre has issued a monsoon alert for parts of Sindh, warning that moderate monsoon currents have begun entering the southeastern districts. According to the forecast, Karachi is expected to remain mostly cloudy and humid over the next three days, with chances of light rain or drizzle during the night and early morning hours. Rainfall—ranging from light to moderate—is likely in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, and Sanghar between July 2 and July 4. Light rain or drizzle may also occur in Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Tando Mohammad Khan, Dadu, Khairpur, Sukkur, and Larkana.
